From Stage to Society: The Arts as a Bridge for Community & Culture
Opera Singer | Arts Advocate | Performer and Public Speaker
Matthew Curran is an accomplished opera singer known for his powerful bass voice, thoughtful presence in performance, and wide range of musical and theatrical experience. On stages near and far, he has sung operatic roles and choral music spanning from the earliest and great standards of opera and choral traditions to a breadth of contemporary and genre-defying music and theater. As a storyteller and life-long devotee to the arts, with a passion for connection, communication, and the cross-section of art and the human experience, his beautiful singing and thought-provoking perspectives on music, singing, and community, leaves audiences with a sense of wonder and renewed awareness of the power of possibility.
A versatile artist, Matthew has brought to life both gods and kings and scoundrels and fools, earning acclaim for his work in beloved favorites like Aida and La Bohème to more modern works like Breaking the Waves by Missy Mazzoli, and Séance on a Wet Afternoon by Broadway legend Stephen Schwartz. A born singing actor with a powerful voice, his dramatic intensity and comedic timing have made him a standout performer in any setting.
This same combination of skills makes him a compelling speaker, capable of captivating audiences with his insights on the intersection of art and culture, singing and humanity, and the importance of education along with the power of possibility.
Matthew’s career has included work with some of the world’s most innovative composers, including Daron Hagen, who chose him to record Edwin Cheney in the opera Shining Brow for the Naxos label, and David Claman, who recently composed a set of five songs specifically for his voice. He has performed with Zürich Opera, Seattle Opera, Atlanta Opera, and New York City Opera, among others, and in venues from Notre Dame Cathedral to Carnegie Hall, and his recordings include the Grammy-nominated Tyberg Masses with the South Dakota Chorale.
Matthew is also a passionate advocate for arts education and cultural preservation. He speaks about the transformative power of the arts and the critical role they play in shaping communities, preserving heritage, and inspiring future generations. His talk, “The Sound of Culture: Preserving Musical Arts in America,” draws from his international experience to make a compelling case for the importance of arts funding and education.
He also offers a signature presentation—“An Evening of Music and the American Experience”—in which he is joined by a pianist to create a rich, immersive experience that blends powerful storytelling, cultural insight, and expressive singing.
